Mr. Joe T. Artis, former owner and operator of J.T. Artis Plumbing Co. and longtime resident of Greensboro, N.C., departed this life August 30, 2004. The funeral service will be Thursday, September 2, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. in Hargett Chapel. Visitation will be prior to the service from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Mr. Artis is survived by his stepdaughter, Phyllis W. Chavis (Odysseus) of Greensboro, N.C.; his stepson Steven D. Webster of Washington D.C.; five step grandchildren; and a special aunt Marie Myrick of Suffolk.

Arthur Scott Conyers

Arthur Scott Conyers, 47, of Suffolk died on August 30, 2004. The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Parr Funeral Home. Rev. Jonathan Judy will officiate. The Interment will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Friends may join the family tonight from 7-8 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Amanda and Matt Moegenberg, 1516 White Marsh Rd., Suffolk.

George Alexander Gary Sr.

George Alexander Gary Sr., 72, of Austin, Texas, died on August 26, 2004. A wake will be held on Friday, September 3, 2004 from 7-8 p.m. in Fuller-Sheffield, Austin, Texas. The funeral services is on Saturday, September 4, 2004 at 11 a.m. at True Light Baptist Church in Austin, Texas.

Horace Junior Holland

Horace Junior Holland (Buck), son of Linwood Holland and Margaret Johnson Holland, was born on February 5, 1961 in Nansemond County.

God called him home on August 27, 2004.

His survivors are his mother and father, Margaret and Linwood Holland; two daughters, Janice Najarro (Ralph) and Belinda Long of Franklin; one son, Terrence Long (Ciquita) of Franklin; special friend, Joe Ann Long; two grandchildren, Amari Long and Dajmari Wyche; six sisters, Thelma Myrick (Fred) and Brenda Boone of Suffolk, Margaret Walton (Raymond) of Zuni, Jarleene Holland of Newport News, Earleene Holland of Franklin and Jacklyn Holland of Zuni; six brothers, John (Janice) Holland of Suffolk, James Holland (Linda) of Carrsville, Clyde Holland of Carrsville, Carroll Holland of Suffolk, Dennis Holland of Suffolk and Thomas Holland (Emma) of Suffolk; three aunts, Mary Johnson, Harriett Felton and Mildred Streeter of New Jersey; three uncles, Horace Holland of New York, Murry Johnson of Suffolk and Rufus Johnson of South Carolina; great aunts, Mariah Francis of Suffolk and Elizabeth Sasse of Pennsylvania; great uncle, Norris Francis of Maryland; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Viewing is on Wednesday from noon to 7 p.m. at the T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home Chapel. The service is on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Pulaski Baptist Church, 6431 Carrsville Highway, Franklin. Interment will be at Hunter Cemetery on Gates Road in Suffolk. T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home is in charge.

John Thomas Hunnicutt Sr.

John Thomas Hunnicutt Sr., 79, of Suffolk died on August 31, 2004. He was a native of Surry County. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 3, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home. The Interment will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk. Friends may join the family on Thursday night at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. and other times at the residence.

Lorraine Ashe Jackson

Lorraine Ashe Jackson, 57, of 932 Manning Road, Suffolk, Va. died August 30, 2004 at her residence. A native of Nansemond County, she was the daughter of Patrick Ashe, Sr. and Alice Gills Ashe. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Virginia Cross, Mandy Sullivan, Sarah Knight and Alma Ashe; brothers Arthur Ashe, Claud Ashe, Booker T. Ashe, James Edwards Ashe, Norman Ashe and Patrick Ashe.

She attended Southwestern High School and received her Associate degree in Business at Paul D. Camp Community College. She was a former manager of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church where she was a member of the Board of Christian Education, Trustee’s wife, Former church clerk, member of the Women’s Fellowship Club and the Young Adult Choir.

She is survived by her husband Joseph L. Jackson Jr.; two daughters La- Tasha Peede (Carlton) of Suffolk and Na-Tasha Jackson of Virginia Beach; one son Demetrius Jackson (Pharnethia) of Suffolk; two granddaughters Ashe’ Peede and Desiree’ Jackson; mother-in-law Susie Jackson; sisters-in law Thelma Ashe of Hampton, Carlyse Ashe, Patricia Almond, Connie Wiggins (Raymond) all of Suffolk; Deborah Burton of Bronx, N.Y., and the late Florine Glover of Queens, N.Y.; brothers-in-law Theodore Jackson (Elsie) and Andre Jackson (Tracey) of Suffolk and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be held Friday, September 3, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Scates. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
