Kenyan man faces child neglect charges

A Suffolk grand jury indicted 33 defendants on 65 charges this week, including a man who allegedly left his two young nieces home alone.

Patrick Thuo, 27, was arrested March 7 after a traffic stop. When asked for identification, he told the officer he is from Kenya and in the United States on a visa, city spokeswoman Debbie George said at the time of the arrest.

The officer sent another officer to the residence where the vehicle was registered in an attempt to get some identification from the man. That officer allegedly found the door open with Thuo’s 1- and 6-year-old nieces there alone.

According to George, the investigation revealed the girls’ mother had left them in Thuo’s care, but he decided to go shoe shopping.

He was indicted on two counts each of child abuse and neglect, cruelty or injury to a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

In addition, the man who pleaded guilty of attempting to steal from a retired police officer after getting shot at during the botched burglary has been indicted on more charges from a separate incident.

Quamaine Lassiter was indicted on charges of possession of marijuana by an inmate, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and obstruction of justice.

The charges stem from a July 19, 2010, incident in which an officer detected a heavy odor of marijuana on Lassiter in the 1000 block of Cogic Square, George said. After being told he would be searched for narcotics, Lassiter allegedly ran, throwing a bag of cocaine as he fled.

After he was taken into custody on the charges, Lassiter was searched at Western Tidewater Regional Jail, where jail officials found marijuana in his buttocks.
