The Eastern Division baseball playoff game between Nansemond River and Kellam postponed to Saturday after a frustrating Friday afternoon waiting for the weather to clear up or for a postponement decision to be made.

Friday’s game was to have started at 4 p.m., two hours earlier than the original schedule, because the Nansemond River players and fans hoped to be able to make it to their prom.

Nansemond River players gather their gear after the final of the Virginia High School League Eastern Division Championships was postponed for weather. The Warrior faceoff against Kellam has been rescheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. at Old Dominion University.

However, a rain delay was called before the game even started because radar showed lightning within the danger zone around the field at Old Dominion University.

With a tornado watch also lingering in the area, skies were gray and threatening even at 4:30, when tournament officials decided to start the game after all.

Only minutes into the game, though, the warning sirens sounded again, and spectators were told to return to their cars. The teams headed for the locker rooms, and the announcers played “It’s Raining Men” on the public address system.

After a long delay, the game finally was postponed. It will be taken up again Saturday at 6 p.m. at Old Dominion University.
