Suffolk police investigators await transfer of a body that was found Wednesday morning in the bed of a white pickup truck parked in the parking lot of the Suffolk Plaza Shopping Center.

Suffolk police have identified the body found in the bed of a pickup truck at a shopping center Wednesday as a Chesapeake man.

Steven Lamar Young, 53, of the 300 block of Shadow Lake Drive, was the victim, according to a press release sent by Tim Kelley, a city spokesman.

Suffolk police closed off much of the parking lot at the Suffolk Plaza Shopping Center on Wednesday morning as they investigated the scene.

Police received a call at about 8:15 a.m. about a suspicious person in the bed of a white pickup truck that was parked there in spaces between Xenith Bank and the main part of the shopping center.

When they arrived, according to Kelley, police found the vehicle with a body inside. The body was wrapped, he added in a later release.

Kelley said police have not yet released the suspected cause of death.

An investigator from the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk was on the scene as police — working beneath a blue tarp that had been stretched across the truck earlier in the morning — loaded the body into a van for transport to Norfolk, where an autopsy was to be performed.

City spokeswoman Debbie George said police had canvassed people at the shopping center as part of their preliminary investigation while a search warrant was being secured for the vehicle and had been told that the vehicle might have been there on Tuesday.

Employees at two different businesses in the center told reporters Wednesday morning that they had seen the white pickup truck parked there as long ago as Friday.
