Edward L. Brooks Jr., 74, of Suffolk, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at his residence. He was a native of Isle of Wight County, Va., and the son of the late Josephine Brooks and Edward L. Brooks Sr.

He attended Booker T. Washington High School. He retired from Oceana Navy Exchange after 37 years. He was a faithful member of Tabernacle Christian for approximately 27 years. He served as a trustee for over 20 years, served on the usher board and sang in the No. 2 choir. He also had been a faithful member of Balm of Gilead Missionary Baptist Church until his death.

He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted friend, Bernice Scott; five daughters, Windi Brooks-Davis, of Richmond, Linda Council (Clifton), of Tarboro, N.C., Candy Coblyn, of Richardson, Texas, Kelly Lewis, of Evans, Ga., and Faye Okolo-Holland (Calvin), of Suffolk; brother, Clinton Brooks (Joyce), of South Ozone Park, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; adopted Scott family, Jan, Andrea, Ricky and Vernon; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, former wife, Shirley Wright Brooks, and many friends.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Balm of Gilead Missionary Baptist Church officiated by Pastor A.S. Hall Sr., senior servant. Interment will be in Balm of Gilead Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence and 2356 Hosier Road. Crocker Funeral Home Inc. is handling the arrangements.
