Elizabeth Holland Bracey

NEWPORT NEWS — Elizabeth Holland Bracey, mother of Betty Bracey Dixon, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012. She was born in Nansemond County, Va., on May 30, 1914. She was the daughter of the late Frederick Carlton and Georgia Mae Holland, and the widow of the love of her life, William Jacob Bracey, who died Sept. 2, 1972. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Holland Whitley.

Elizabeth worked at the Suffolk Gas Company and Heatflame Bottled Gas Co. as a bookkeeper for many years. She lived most of her life in Suffolk and moved to Newport News in 1992. She was a member of Suffolk Christian Church for most of her life.  Elizabeth taught Sunday school and was active in many capacities in the church. Upon moving to Newport News, she joined Grace United Methodist Church.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Betty Bracey Dixon; a niece, Jean Whitley Austen; two nephews, John Hardy Whitley Jr. (Nancy), and James Frederick “Fred” Whitley (Beverly), and several other nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

The family would especially like to thank Mrs. Sandra Overman, who has cared for Mother for the last 10 years. She has truly been an angel sent from God. We would also like to thank Mrs. Elizabeth Early for her care with Mother and Dr. John Brady, The Village Doctor, who has given mother such excellent care.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1209 Country Club Road, Newport News, VA 23606. Inurnment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Suffolk Christian Church, 216 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434, or Grace United Methodist Church, or the SPCA, 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23606. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
