Phillip Winslow Jr. of Suffolk was the winner of the Suffolk Golf Association Club Championship, finishing 1-under with a two-day score of 143 this past weekend at the Suffolk Golf Course.

“It was the first time I had won it, so I was actually really happy to finally do it,” Winslow said.

Winslow shot a 72 on Saturday and a 71 on Sunday to win by five strokes over Denny Lewis, his nearest competition.

The holes on the greens were set up in a particularly challenging way on Sunday, making Winslow’s accomplishment even more impressive.

“The course was in great condition, great shape, but they set the pins up in some pretty tricky spots,” he said. “I shot 71 on Sunday and probably left a couple strokes out there and so, for me, it was probably the best round of golf I’ve ever played, especially in the tournament conditions and the pressure of the final round.”

Suffolk Golf Course owner and operator Eddie Luke was disappointed about the turn out for the event, but echoed Winslow’s sentiments about the readiness of the course.

“I think we had about 30 players, but overall the golf course was in really, really good shape and I think everybody was excited about that,” he said.

The Suffolk Golf Course will host the Annual Turkey Blitz on Nov. 17. The winning team receives a turkey.
