Virginia Mehalko

Virginia Mae Burch Mehalko, 92, of Suffolk, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Lake Prince Woods Retirement Community. Born June 16, 1920, in Bertie County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late David Abner Burch and the late Lily Early Burch. She was married to the late Rudolph Edward Mehalko. She was of the Roman Catholic faith and was an active member of Saint Mary of The Presentation Roman Catholic Church, Suffolk, Va.

During World War II, from June 1943 to June 1947, she was employed as a boxcar warehouse manager, at the Nansemond Ordnance Depot, Pig Point, Nansemond County, Va. After the war, she was employed by the former Greenfield Dairy. Subsequently, she held the positions of secretary, bookkeeper, and retired as secretary/treasurer of Southern Oil Company. In her retirement, she enjoyed working at Bunny’s Restaurant, The Nutcracker, Producers Peanuts, and a local antique shop all located in Suffolk, Va.

She is survived by her son, David Rudolph Mehalko, of Danville, Va.; son, Phillip Edward Mehalko and wife, Claudia, of Santa Fe, Texas; and her sister, Rosa Burch Saint John, of Suffolk, Va. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Danya Zuniga and Dana Mehalko, of Danville, Va., grandson, Jason Mehalko, of College Station, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Hazel Burch White, LaLee Burch Richards, Mary Burch Craddock, and Willie Burch, and by her brothers Sydney Burch and Henry “Bob” Burch.

A memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at 1 p.m., at Saint Mary of the Presentation Roman Catholic Church, 202 S. Broad St., Suffolk, Va. A reception will follow immediately after the Mass, at the parish hall adjacent to the church.
