A Virginia Beach criminal defense attorney had two fingers severed while visiting a client at Western Tidewater Regional Jail last week, according to a police report.

At 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday, a Suffolk police officer responded to the jail after Greg David McCormack, 59, got his hand slammed in the steel secured door, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

McCormack had just finished speaking with his client and was leaving the booth when he stuck his hand in between the door as it was closing, Klink added.

He was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Klink said.

McCormack told Virginia Lawyers Weekly the door “just slammed shut” as he was on his way out. Doctors were unable to reattach his fingertips.

He is considering a claim for damages, the industry publication’s blog said.
