Warriors take third in N.C. tourney

The Nansemond River varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Southern Lee High School, of Sanford, N.C., 71-51 on Saturday to place third in the 11th annual Holiday in the Pines tournament in Pinehurst, N.C.

Junior guard Devon Oakley led the way with 27 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. He was named to the all-tournament team. Senior forward Ed Drew registered 14 points — 12 in the fourth quarter — and 11 boards despite being in foul trouble.

The Warriors shot a season-high 57 percent from the field, out-rebounded the Cavaliers 48-30 and forced 27 turnovers to end up 2-1 in the tourney.

Nansemond River (9-2, 6-1) will play at home on Friday against Oscar Smith.
