The Nansemond-Suffolk swim team experienced victory and defeat during its first home meet on Friday evening at YMCA’s Camp Arrowhead. NSA’s boys’ and girls’ teams beat Greenbrier Christian 68-23 and 68-12, respectively. The boys narrowly fell to Norfolk Christian, 48-46, and the girls lost 47-41.

NSA head coach Meredith Young felt very positively about the meet overall.

“This was a great meet throughout and until the very end,” she wrote in an e-mail.

In terms of the end, she was referring to the boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay, in which NSA’s Gregory Beale, Matt Towler, David Forman and Ben Wilson raced against Norfolk Christian. Though the boys lost the overall meet to NC, they edged out its relay team in this event, 3:44.11 to 3:44.98.

“It was truly an amazing last race and a great end to the swim meet,” Young stated.

NSA had some notable individual performances, including John Wade who posted a personal record and new state qualifying time in the 50-yard freestyle, 24.65 seconds. Taylor Berard accomplished the same things in the same event on the girls’ side, with a 27.56 time. Berard also made the qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle, at 1:01.31.

In the boys’ 100-yard freestyle event, Beale made the state qualifying time with a 51.58-second race.

NSA also had a solid presence in one of the long distance events.

“The 500 free is a very long and difficult event for our swimmers,” Young stated on Saturday. “Hannah Lee Liedy came up to me this week at practice and asked to train for the 500 free. With only less than a week of practice, she swam the 500 yesterday and did great with a time of 7:30.15.”

Friday will be Senior Day for NSA as it hosts Bishop Sullivan Catholic and Cape Henry.
