Berry earns pre-season honor

Suffolk’s Jermaine Berry, a Nansemond River High School alumnus and Mount Olive College student, has earned a second-team all-region selection for the 2013 NCBWA Division II Baseball Preseason Southeast Region Poll and Preseason All-Southeast Region Team.

Mount Olive is ranked No. 1 and leads all teams with six all-region selections. The honorary team was selected in a vote by members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Mount Olive, the 2011 NCAA II Southeast Regional champion and 2008 National Champion, received four of 11 first-place votes and collected 101 points in the poll. Francis Marion, the NCAA II Southeast Regional runner-up in each of the last three years, also received four first-place votes and finished second with 93 points. Last year’s Southeast Regional champion Catawba gathered the remaining three first-place votes and finished with 87 points.

Mount Olive opens its season this weekend with a three-game non-conference series at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon, and then wrap up the series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
