1,500 chickens dead in fire

About 1,500 chickens died in a fire in a poultry house on Milford Lane Friday morning, according to Suffolk officials.

About 1,500 chickens were killed Friday morning in a fire at a poultry house in the 500 block of Milford Lane, near Holland Road.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 8:18 a.m., according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink, who stated in a press release that the owner of the farm had reported a fire at the rear of one of three structures on the farm.

Each of the structures houses about 21,800 chickens.

A truck from Perdue Farms was called to evaluate the scene and remove the remaining chickens from the affected chicken house, Klink stated.

Units responding to the fire included Engines 4, 6 and 7; Tankers 1 and 7; Ladder 6; Medic 7; EMS 1; Rehab 1; and Battalion 1. There were no injuries to firefighters.

The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Klink.
