Driver charged in hit and run

Rescue workers and police investigate an accident on East Washington Street Monday afternoon. A local man has been charged with hit and run in relation to the wreck.

A Suffolk man has been charged with hit and run following a Monday afternoon incident.

Abraham Mitchell, 82, of the 400 block of Wilson Street, is accused of leaving the scene in the 2300 block of East Washington Street after he allegedly struck a 27-year-old man, who was riding his bicycle, about 1:15 p.m.

The victim told police the driver got out and spoke to a witness who was trying to help the victim, then got back in his vehicle and left the scene, according to information provided by city spokeswoman Diana Klink.

After hearing a description of the vehicle and driver over the radio, another officer saw Mitchell down the street and initiated a traffic stop. Mitchell told the officer that the woman told him she was taking care of it and that he could leave, according to Klink.

The victim was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to be treated for injuries to his leg, hip and back.
