A fire early Sunday morning destroyed a family’s home in the Holland area.

Firefighters responded to the home in the 6200 block of Leafwood Road, which runs between Route 58 and Southwestern Boulevard. The call came in at 3:50 a.m., and units arrived on scene nine minutes later, according to a city press release.

Firefighters initially did not know if anyone was inside the building but later determined the occupants were not there. The brick, ranch-style structure was fully engulfed in flames, and the roof had collapsed by the time firefighters arrived.

Firefighters surrounded the house to put out the fire by dousing it with water, which had to be trucked in with tankers and engines because of the fire’s rural location. The blaze was brought under control within an hour, according to the press release.

No injuries to firefighters were reported. The owner eventually arrived back home from work, according the pres release.

Two adults and one teen were displaced and are being assisted by the Suffolk chapter of the American Red Cross. The Suffolk fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
