Player of the Week nominations

Following are this week’s Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week nominees:

  • Matt Boone, senior for Nansemond River High School baseball — He continued his successful play on the mound on Wednesday when he unexpectedly had to take over for the starting pitcher, who was injured after one-third of an inning. Boone threw seven strikeouts as the Warriors beat King’s Fork High School 6-0.
  • Sarah Bowyer, junior for Lakeland High School softball — For the 1-6 Lady Cavaliers, she showed leadership with her numbers (2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs) and contributed to her team’s confidence moving forward after only a narrow 3-2 loss to respected district power Grassfield High School.
  • Gabrielle Snipes, senior for King’s Fork High School track and field — Despite the cold during Wednesday’s district regular season meet, she won the 100-meter dash in 12.63 seconds, out-leapt everyone else with a distance of 17’0” to win the long jump and was part of the winning 4×100-meter relay team (47.50 seconds).
  • Zoe Waddell, sophomore for Suffolk Christian Academy soccer — She scored twice within the span of about a minute to put the Lady Knights up 4-0 in the first half against the Virginia Beach Friends School on the way to a 5-3 victory.
