Saturday’s 11th annual Suffolk Family YMCA Spring Stride enjoyed a strong turnout in its second year at Camp Arrowhead on Kenyon Road.

Camp Arrowhead operations director Matt Lewis estimated that about 120 people participated in either the 5K or the one-mile fun run/walk.

“It was a wonderful success,” he said. “People had a great time coming out there. For me, one of the most enjoyable things was watching the kids getting very excited about running their one-mile fun run. We had a lot of youth out there.”

Richard Caylor of Norfolk recorded the fastest 5.66K time, finishing in 25 minutes, 32 seconds. The best one-mile times came from 12-year-old Betsy Pollard of Suffolk and 8-year-old Bradley Troyer of Norfolk.

“One of the great things that we try and do at the Y is get kids involved with healthy activities, and what (is) a more healthy activity than doing a race on the weekend?” Lewis said.

Suffolk Family YMCA health and wellness director Anna Guibas took note of some of the particularly memorable moments, like one shared by Jason and Patricia Stewart of Suffolk.

“We had a husband and wife run hand-in-hand to the finish line,” Guibas said. “The wife is an avid runner, and it was her husband’s first time to run the 5K, and they did it together.”

A mother-and-daughter pair, Dawn Sutherland and Katelyn Cross of Smithfield, also crossed the line together.

Suffolk’s Karen Miles ran her first 5K and came in second among women in the 45-49 age bracket with a 40:58 time.
