When you hear of my home going don’t worry about me, I’m just another soldier gone on home to get my reward.

Mrs. Oree Nancy White Stokes was born Feb. 22, 1923, to the late Willie and Anna White in Sumter, S.C., and went into eternal rest April 18, 2013.

At an early age after attending school in Suffolk, she moved to Bronx, N.Y., and later to Washington, D.C., when she met and married her husband, Johnnie Thomas Stokes, of 55 years. She attended and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church in South Carolina. After relocating to Franklin, she joined Piney Grove Baptist Church in Franklin, where she served faithfully on the Usher Board, and a faithful member for many years of the Ladies Chorus, where she served until her health began to fail. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She had been faithful in being present for meetings, services and rehearsals. She was employed at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory for over 30 years.

She will be greatly missed and during her long illness the church and members never forgot her or her family.

She leaves to remember her lovely life and the love she had for her family, her loving husband, Johnnie T. Stokes; the daughter she raised, Madyun, from Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Shafe, Hassan, Zakiyyah, Diayyah, Abdul, Khadijah, Khalika; 27 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosa Lee Robinson, of High Point, N.C., Mary E. Gillard Manning, of South Carolina; eight nieces; nine nephews; goddaughter, Deneen Ricker; good friends, Alice Edwards and Marie Conker; cousins; great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. by the Rev. Clarence L. Myrick at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, with burial at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, from 7 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.
