Another Republican has announced he will stand for election to fill retiring Sen. Harry Blevins’ 14th District seat.

J. Christopher Stearns announced the news on his Facebook page on Tuesday. He will face Delegate John Cosgrove in a “firehouse primary” set to be held May 9.

Voters in the Airport, Whaleyville, Pittmantown, Kilby’s Mill, Holland and Lakeside precincts are eligible to participate in the canvass. Portions of the White Marsh, Lake Cohoon and Elephant’s Fork/Westhaven precincts are also in the 14th District, meaning voters in those precincts should check to make sure they are in the 14th District before heading to the polling place.

The special voting place for all Suffolk voters in this canvass is the Lee-Jordan Club House, 1709 Pitchkettle Road.

The deadline for Republicans to file is 5 p.m. Thursday, May 2.

Stearns says on his Facebook page that he considers himself a “libertarian Republican.” He served on the Committee on Resolutions at the 2012 Republican National Convention and is the chairman of Virginia’s Third District Republican Committee.

Cosgrove currently represents the 78th District in the Virginia House of Delegates, to which he was elected in 2001. He is a former member and vice-mayor of the Chesapeake City Council.

Democrats have not announced plans to hold a primary to nominate someone to run in the special election, which is set for Aug. 6.
