Second challenger enters sheriff’s race

Published 8:35pm Saturday, April 27, 2013

Another candidate has stepped into the race for sheriff of the city of Suffolk.

C. Aaron Johnson grew up in Newport News and moved to Suffolk about five years ago. He has worked 13 years in law enforcement, including 10 years with the Newport News Sheriff’s Office.

He is facing current Sheriff Raleigh Isaacs Sr., who is approaching his 20th year in office, and another challenger, Jennifer Pond, a former Suffolk police officer and current deputy sheriff in the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.

Also in preparation for this November’s constitutional officer elections, two other incumbents have filed to run for re-election.

Commissioner of the Revenue Thomas Hazelwood and Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Phillips Ferguson are so far unchallenged in their bid to return to their jobs.

The deadline for candidates for constitutional offices to file is June 11.

    Memo to Editor:

Starting immediately, please relegate this article and its several unfounded and anonymous attacks upon the Sheriff to “old news” with no further front page computer access until and if a special prosecutor
is designated to investigate the charges below concerning the termination of employment by the candidate who is the subject of the allegations and perhaps also the “Tea Party” role in having its official become so outspoken in her official capacity so early in the electoral process and before any open forums have been held.

I’ll say this again, slowly, so maybe you will understand.

I am NOT acting in official capacity on this matter.

I id’d myself as a member of the Suffolk Tea Party only because there are plenty of people on this forum who know I am in the Suffolk HRTP. I also made it quite clear that i was NOT acting on behalf of the Suffolk HRTP in this thread – because Suffolk HRTP has NOT endorsed anyone at this point, and may not – Suffolk HRTP did NOT endorse anyone in the Nov 2012 elections.

Last I checked, we still lived in America, and as a private citizen, I have the freedom of speech to say what I want, just as you do.

Talk about Anonymous attacks – I’ve got three attacks on me in this thread now – “fred”, “dog” (who I suspect is actually “fred” but am not sure), and you Mildred. I’ve given my name. Your turn. I dare you.

FWIW — don’t worry, tonight around 10-11pm when the SNH posts it’s daily stories, this will likely get bumped off the front page, and the comments here will all disappear.

It is true that this is not about Pond leaving the SPD and why.  Its about how.  True she was named Officer of the Quarter but so were three other officers who are still employed.  A person with integrity doesn’t just abandon their job by leaving their equipment in their car and quitting.  This not only puts into question her professionalism but also whether or not she possesses the ability to hold a leadership role in any capacity.  As a supervisor myself I cant imagine any employee of mine walking off the job without at least discussing the issues with me.  Taking the cowardly way out tells me she is not qualified to be our Sheriff.

First of all let’s NOT skirt the glaring issue at hand. This is not about Jen Pond leaving the SPD and why. This is about her as the most ETHICAL FIT for Sheriff in the City of Suffolk and it’s Citizens. Jen Pond was a recent award winning Officer, Winning Officer of the First Quarter for SPD last year. I know many many SPD Officers who support her and stand by her ethical standards and accumen as a Police Officer. I know first hand that she was not asked to leave the SPD!! Please see below link validating her award: http://www.suffolknewsherald.com/2013/03/28/officer-of-the-year/

AND after reading this, let’s be reminded that an elected Sheriff represents his/her City as a LEO NOT as an individual who asserts power to protect his criminal son. This is not anything other than factual.

I think we should out of respect for Ms Pond’s past service, regardless how blemished, allow her to withdraw from this race with respect and without the need for the effect that public scrutiny is likely to have on damaging her reputation in the future if these kinds of negative comments about her continue in the future.

At least, among all the mud slinging against the Sheriff, we are getting to some issues:

Should the Sheriff continue to give hiring preference to retired officers who reside in Suffolk?

Should the lady opponent explain openly whatever she is implying about why her last jobs ended so badly?

Should the “tea party” explain why it (whatever it is) says it hasn’t endorsed anyone but yet the most prolific and stubborn writer to this one column (Pussycat? with ten separate write-ins on the article alone) identifies herself as a “tea party” official? Isaacs is by far the frontrunner among conservatives, and what is the basis for this group (?) being so insistent for an opponent whose credentials appear to be collapsing before they are even presented.

Is there any federal prohibition against at least one opponent to the Sheriff getting thinly disguised but obvious help from the Suffolk News by allowing that opponent’s spokesman to write and publish ten separate attacks in this one column alone relating to little more than attacks on the incumbent?

Hi Fred. Nice to see you under another name. I’ve named myself, will you?

FWIW – 11 posts now, because some people don’t seem to be able to comprehend words. I identified myself as a member of the tea party, because several who are part of the community here already know me as such, which is why I was very careful to mention that the Tea Party has NOT endorsed anyone yet. Believe it or not, we do not encourage ‘group think’ so everyone is allowed to have their own opinions, and we don’t always agree with each other.

Want to know what the Tea Party in Suffolk is really about? Come to our next meeting. 730p, 1st & 3rd Tuesday of every month over at Constantia House. I’d love to meet you in person.

Bottom line here is that we NEED a new Sheriff! The current one needs to go and a new one needs to replace him. I for one will be voting for Jen Pond because I know of her integrity, I’ve seen her drive to be a better person and law enforcement officer, I’ve witnessed her doing the unpopular thing because it was the right thing, and I’ve known her to make a stand even thought it would damage her own financial house. Shes black and white yet thinks outside the box and she has the education and know how to get our Sheriffs office to the next level. Our current Sheriff was burnt out long ago and stopped working to better the Sheriffs dept in a whole. A new face is needed with the fire and drive to make the Dept what it should be.

Well Fred, when you said “the Sheriff’s fairly solidly established track record” you revealed two things, first that the current Sheriff does not have a solid track record and your grammar needs work. I have in excess of twenty years law enforcement experience, and have had the opportunity to work with Jen Pond. I can say that there is no question about her integrity, ethics, or dedication to this field. It is time that we have a Sheriff with these qualities in the city of Suffolk. I have had the occasion to hear Sheriff Isaacs speak at a public forum and was shocked to hear him say that he would not hire anyone unless they lived in the city of Suffolk. Not only is this illegal it is just another example of his antiquated techniques utilized to run this office. We need a Sheriff with vision that can grow with the city of Suffolk. It is my opinion that Jen Pond is that person!

Your Blue Line is very thin when you talk about Jen Pond around the Suffolk Police Department. I talked to a high school friend that also has many years of service at SPD and he said “Pond is nuts.” The reason for her last resignation was a verbal reprimand for her lack of productivity in the tactical squad. She got mad and accused fellow officers of corruption. It was investigated and found to be false. To save face she quit without any notice and left her equipment in her assigned police car at the North Suffolk precinct. This integrity claim is BS and she is blaming everyone for her failures. She wants to be Sheriff: Give me a break.

Eight (8) comments here alone from PussyKat on this article alone.

Doesn’t there exist some requirement that candidate Pond should have to pay for these attempts to promote her candidacy and identify the source once comments become blatantly anonymous but still transparently onesided? Is Suffolk News still bound by media fairness doctrine in reporting and supporting these attacks/anonymous charges and inuendos against our elected official when the larger campaign issue at this time that others are raising herein relates to unexplained past job performance in terminating past employment by those now seeking to attack the Sheriff’s fairly solidly established track record.

I’m not a part of Pond’s campaign. She doesn’t pay me a red cent. I’m a citizen, commenting in an open forum. I am the current vice-chair of the Suffolk Chapter Hampton Roads Tea Party — However, Suffolk HRTP has NOT, as yet, officially endorsed ANYONE in this race.

I’m not anonymous. I’ve said on here before what my name is – Lorraine Yuriar. Who are you “fred”?

Also, since I assume you are referencing the info about the sheriff’s son, FWIW — It’s not hard to do a search on anyone’s name over at the VA Courts website. That’s what I did when someone suggested that past cases “might” be used against a complainant. No one here has said that has happened, and as of this moment, the court case against the Sheriff’s son is still pending, so my source may be wrong. That’s why I asked SNH to look into it.

If she quit for misuse of power at pd. why isn’t she demanding a investigation at pd. I would like to see that . If she becomes sheriff can she have pd investigated for what she says we’re integrity issues. I would support her on that one.

That’s a big part of her plan. She did all she could from within the Dept, and at our meeting she made it clear that the majority of SPD are great officers. She will need to work with SPD, and doesn’t want to burn bridges, but she does intend to get to the bottom of things.

Along with that, she wants to get the Sheriff’s office accredited – what that means, as I understand it, is that there would be strict, by-the-book rules, and oversight to be certain the rules are followed. Right now, Suffolk Sheriff’s Office is one of only a very few in the area NOT accredited. I’d wonder why that is…. but then, the Sheriff’s son keeps getting charges dropped & prosecutors who refuse to prosecute him…. Things that make you go hmmmmm…..

She resigned from the SPD most recently due to reasons of her own integrity. She witnessed what she believed was a missuse of power on the parts of others and when light was shed on the situation/persons involved and NOTHING was founded she resigned and I can’t say I blame her knowing the integrity she holds personally and expects those whom she works with to have as well. Most people don’t resign from a career job for the sake of just doing it or to give up on it. Jen is a good and caring person who lives her life the right way as do her family members. Can’t say the same for the current sheriff.

      Thekytikat,

This type of behavior was ops normal in the small town/county I lived during the 1960′s and 1970′s. It was an offshoot from small town (minded?) politics, special interest, good old boy, and knowing who has what skeletons in the closet. Although not completely illegal, it sure was an unethical way to conduct business.

If what your little birdee says is true…then I am not suprised. It makes me wonder if the roommate had a previous charge that was suspended by the Courts (I’m not saying he did or didn’t) and was told to drop his complaint or else go to jail (again, not saying this true or untrue). This is what I perceive…regardless of what happened, perception and public opinion is always 100 percent. People in Civil service and Public Office should always be aware of this fact…you never become an embarrassment to the organization or your employer.

Just a few thoughts from someone who served the public for 35 years.

Good catch MAB. Following few searches over at the VA Courts website turns up that the man pressing charges against Isaacs Jr has several PAST DUE fines for various charges. Lastest case against the roomate was in 2012, but he’s got a LONG sheet of Past Due Charges.
