Luanne Naughton has been busily working for months to convert a former antiques store in downtown Suffolk into a hobby shop.

Her dream is finally about to come to fruition. She is looking forward to a grand opening event on June 1 at the store in the 100 block of North Main Street.

Luanne Naughton will open a hobby, game and sport shop next month on North Main Street. She shows off two of her first consignments, a bicycle and pair of skis.

“This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” said Naughton. “I live in Suffolk, so I want to work here.”

Naughton’s store will carry a variety of equipment and supplies for numerous hobbies, crafts and sports.

“I just love that stuff, especially the hobby part of it,” Naughton said. “I just like knowing how to do things.”

She has a particular interest in what she calls “grassroots hobbies,” such as beekeeping, home brewing and woodworking, so she will carry equipment for those hobbies.

The store also will carry equipment for hobbies popular to the area such as radio-control cars and planes.

“I have a lot of that stuff,” she said. “A lot of people around here do radio controls.”

Naughton also already has an extensive collection of old board games. She will take items on consignment, such as musical instruments and larger sports equipment; already, the store has a bicycle and a pair of skis waiting for sale.

“We’re open to accepting consignments,” she said.
