A camper trailer was destroyed and a man injured in a fire on Thursday in Whaleyville.

A 57-year-old man suffered burns to his upper body Thursday evening while trying to put out a fire in a camper trailer in the 300 block of Great Fork Road in the Whaleyville area.

The victim was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered to be life threatening, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink.

Fire and rescue responded to a call about the fire at 5:23 p.m., Klink stated in an email. When they arrived, they found the camper, which was located behind a residence, fully engulfed in flames.

Engines 1, 2 and 8; Tankers 1 and 8; Medic 8; Battalion 1 and the Fire Marshal’s office responded and were aided by the Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department. The fire was brought under control at 5:35 p.m., according to Klink.

The camper trailer was destroyed, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
