Janice Carroll Copeland Carter, 76, passed away June 23, 2013.

A native of Nansemond County, she is predeceased by her parents, William E. and Bessie H. Copeland, and her husband, Glen R. “Ronnie” Carter.

Janice retired after 38 years in the central office of the Nansemond County and Suffolk school systems. She was an avid horse lover, especially Tennessee Walking horses and spent more than 40 years owning and showing them, earning numerous ribbons and trophies. Later she became an avid slot machine player, bridge player, and gardener. Janice was a member of Suffolk Christian Church.

Survivors include her children, Mark G. Carter and wife, Ruthie, of Mechanicsville, and Tracy L. Francis and husband, Dave, of Suffolk; grandchildren, Joshua V. Carter, Mary C. Dandridge and husband, Chip, Rebecca L. Carter, Carroll E. Carter, and Glen E. Carter, all of Mechanicsville, Angela M. Francis and D. Brandon Francis, of Suffolk; and great-grandchild, Layla N. Francis.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 27, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, by the Rev. Michael D. Halley and Pastor Chip Dandridge. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Wednesday, June 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979 or to the McAlister Lodge 185, c/o James C.
