Brenda Copeland Newland, 62, native of Suffolk, went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2013, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Darlene Simms Copeland.

She graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Suffolk. Brenda married Gregory Jones in 1970 and to that union, they had one daughter, Patrice Jones. She later married Louis Newland and to that union, she had one son, Louis Newland Jr. She returned to school and received her license to become a Certified Nursing Assistant from STOP Organization and later was employed at the Suffolk Health Department. Brenda retired as a cafeteria manager from Northern Shores Elementary School. She was a member of the LaVogue Social and Savings Club.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Patrice Jones (Chowan); her son, Louis Newland; two sisters, Marsha Whitfield (Wendell) and Vanessa Bennett-Newsome, of Suffolk; one brother, William Hyman (Anntionita), of Virginia Beach; two aunts, Pattie R. Garris and Elaine Lee (Clarence), of Suffolk; uncles, Johnnie C. Copeland Jr., Leon Copeland (Mary), Richard Copeland (Barbara), Alvin Copeland (Jacqueline); two granddaughters, Brittany Danielle Morgan Jones, of Chesapeake, and Briana Hill, of Suffolk; one grandson, Raeqwon Wiggins, of Suffolk; one great-grandson, Carter Jones Turner, of Chesapeake; one godson, Shaun Evans Cross Jr., of Charlotte, N.C.; special cousin, Clementine Powell; best friend/big sister, Elsie Cross; friends, Jessie McCoy, Dora Pearson and Carolyn Johnson; and a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins and many friends.

A homegoing service will be held at Healing Chapel Baptist Church, 2375 Godwin Blvd., Suffolk, on Monday, July 1, 2013, at 1 p.m. officiated by Pastor Morris Allmond Sr. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 2000 Cedarwood Lane, Suffolk, and also on Sunday at Crocker Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
