Long weekend for lotto winner

Published 10:21pm Wednesday, July 3, 2013

It was a long weekend for John Washington. He had a Virginia Lottery ticket in his pocket worth $100,000, and he was waiting until the Lottery’s Hampton Roads customer service center opened on Monday morning so he could redeem it.

The Suffolk man matched all five numbers in the June 28 Cash 5 day drawing to win the $100,000 top prize. He bought the ticket at the 7-Eleven at 5827 East Virginia Beach Boulevard in Norfolk.

“It feels great right now,” he told Lottery officials when he was finally able to claim his prize Monday morning.

The winning numbers in the June 28 day drawing were 3-6-9-12-15. The drawing produced an unusually large number of winning tickets. Washington’s ticket was one of 12 to win $100,000 each. An additional seven tickets each won $50,000 and 15 tickets won $25,000. The total payout in that one drawing was more than $1.9 million.

Washington said he hopes to pay bills and invest his winnings.
