Church honors co-pastor

Pleasant Union Baptist Church, 215 Webb St., is celebrating the Rev. Naomi Powell Chambers during the month of July.

The theme is “A Living Legend: God’s Servant.” Special services are planned each Sunday.

Chambers has served 41 years as elect lady and 20 years as co-pastor of the church with her husband, the Rev. Vaurice T. Chambers. She has been the director of the Virginia University of Lynchburg, Suffolk Extension. She has been the recipient of many awards for outstanding work in various areas.

She was the first female moderator of the Sharon Missionary Baptist Association and Allied Bodies of Virginia from 2007 to 2009; was appointed Parent Body Leader of the Virginia Baptist State Convention 2012 to the present; was appointed senior chairman of the Senior Ministry Development Commission of Virginia Baptist State Convention from 2012 to the present; and was appointed oversight pastor, the first appointed position by the Sharon Missionary Baptist Association.

Her husband honored her in the July 7 service. Speakers for the rest of the month are the Rev. Lessie Laury for July 14; the Rev. Janice White for July 21; the Rev. Deborah Gholson for July 28.

The recognition will culminate with a meet and greet reception and a “You Can Come Home” reunion on July 27 on the church grounds.
