An accident on Route 460 at 3:45 a.m. Thursday closed a portion of the roadway for much of the morning, as emergency crews worked to clean up the wreckage.

The accident, which took place in the 4100 block of Pruden Boulevard near the Pruden Center, closed one eastbound lane of the highway. A Suffolk spokeswoman said that lane was expected to have been open again by 8 a.m.

A Jeep that had run out of gas and was stopped in the roadway was struck by a tractor trailer, which then came to rest in the ditch by the road, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink.

The driver of the Jeep, Garland Lowe of Suffolk, was not in his vehicle at the time, and the driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured, Klink stated in a press release.

Lowe was charged with improper stopping on the roadway and driving on a suspended license, according to Klink.
