Back to school rally set

Published 11:37pm Thursday, August 29, 2013

A back-to-school rally at John F. Kennedy Middle School on Saturday will bring the entire community together for Suffolk Steelers football, school supply giveaways, children’s activities and other events.

Organizer Theotis Porter was inspired when he attended a National Night Out event. He wanted to do something similar but centrally located, he said.

“I thought, ‘I’m going to see what I can do,’” he said. “It’s going to be a fun day.”

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with Suffolk Steelers games taking place before that.

“There’s plenty for the kids to do,” Porter said.

There will be a school supply giveaway, face painting, bounce houses, refreshments and fun. Kids also will get a chance to appear in a music video by Porter.

“I want to bring everybody together for one common cause,” he said. “Come have fun and get ready for school.”

The middle school is located at 2325 E. Washington St.
