Nansemond River High School’s field hockey team rebounded from a season-opening home loss to Grassfield High School with Wednesday’s 2-0 victory on the road against Great Bridge High School.

Lady Warriors head coach Ali Mowry saw notable improvement from the Grassfield game.

“Our positioning was much better,” not just on defense, but everywhere on the field, she said.

Proper positioning led to both goals scored by sophomore mid-fielder Jaclyn Mounie.

The game was scoreless in the first half, but during the second, senior forward Kimberly Bates dribbled up the baseline toward the Lady Wildcats’ goal and hit to Mounie, who was waiting next to the back post of the goal to knock the ball in.

Mounie also scored the second goal from the back post on a pass from junior forward/mid-fielder Juliana Stewart.

On offense, the Lady Warriors had eight penalty corners, and on defense, senior goalie Brooke Street achieved her first shutout.

Nansemond River (1-1, 0-0) travels to play Indian River High School on Wednesday.
