United States Marine Corps Cpl. David A. Waterfield Jr. was promoted to his current rank Aug. 1.

He is the son of Karyn and David A. Waterfield Sr. and the brother of Stasha Waterfield, all of Suffolk.

An honor graduate of Lakeland High School, where he was a member of the Air Force Junior ROTC program, Waterfield enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2011, attending Infantry Training Battalion School at Camp Lejeune, N.C., followed by Security Force Training in Chesapeake, where he was recognized with a Meritorious Mast in 2012 for superior performance and achievement in ranking third in his class.

He is stationed at the naval submarine base in King’s Bay, Ga., where he received his second Meritorious Mast in June for superior performance of his duties and in recognition of his selection as Marine Corps Security Battalion Marine of the Quarter for the third quarter.

Cpl. Waterfield recently completed training to become a Marine Corps martial arts instructor.
