Player of the Week nominees

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Deshaun Wethington, sophomore for King’s Fork High School football — He was crucial early on Friday and never more crucial than late in the home game against Great Bridge High School, running in the 2-point conversion that earned the 44-43 win in double overtime. He carried the ball 24 times for 104 yards, three touchdowns and two 2-point conversions.POTWnewlogo-Cropped
  • Michael Cornette, junior for Suffolk Christian Academy soccer — He produced a hat trick in a 9-0 victory over visiting Chesapeake Bay Academy on Monday and then contributed to his school’s very first win over Gateway Christian School on Tuesday. He scored the goal that tied the game in the second half and helped shift momentum on the way to a 4-1 home win.
  • Latrell “Vegas” Sandifer, senior for Nansemond River High School football — He led the Warriors to their first win of the season on Friday with a career-best performance, carrying the ball 22 times for 254 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-14 victory over host Indian River High School.
  • Summer Parker, senior for Lakeland High School field hockey — The Lady Cavaliers’ all-time leading goal-scorer put six more in this past week. She scored four goals to go with two assists in a 9-1 road win against Deep Creek High School on Monday, and then she added two more goals and two more assists in 7-1 victory over visiting Grassfield High School.
