Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • Uriah Adams, senior for King’s Fork High School football: With only a limited passing game on Friday, he made up for it on the ground, running 19 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns on runs of five, 41 and 20 yards in a win against Nansemond River High School. After a difficult Monday night win against Lakeland High School, when the Bulldogs ran for only 116 yards, Adams’ performance paved the way for 336 against the Warriors.
  • Ja’Juan Walker, junior for Lakeland High School football: His fourth-quarter heroics made sure Friday night’s large Lakeland homecoming crowd would be witness to the Cavaliers’ first win of the season. With his team leading 10-0 in the final quarter against Hickory High School, he intercepted a pass, then ran 80 yards for a score to help Lakeland win the game 17-0.
  • Brooks Gillerlain, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy volleyball: Replacing graduate and first-team all-state talent Quinby Hines at setter this season, she continued her strong play this week. Stepping it up each match, she had 28 assists Tuesday versus Norfolk Academy, 30 assists and two aces Thursday versus Norfolk Collegiate and 42 assists Friday versus Collegiate School. NSA’s win-streak hit 23, including no sets lost.
