Cooperative Extension plans mushroom workshop

The Virginia Cooperative Extension Office in Suffolk will hold a Mushroom Production Workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 6321 Holland Road.

Learn about the biology of fungi, and mushroom production and marketing with a focus on shiitake mushroom production on natural logs. Participants will try their hand at shiitake log inoculation.

Presenters will include Dr. Greg Frey and Wanda Johnson of Virginia State University in Petersburg, and Mark Jones, owner and operator of Sharondale Farm, Keswick.

The cost is $5 per person and includes informational material and supplies for the hands-on activity.

Participants should pre-register by contacting the City of Suffolk Extension Office at 514-4331. Checks should be made payable to VCE City of Suffolk. There must be a minimum of five registrants to hold the program with a maximum of 30 registrants.
