In what law enforcement officials believe to be the oldest case ever to be prosecuted in Isle of Wight County, a 63-year-old man has been indicted on a rape case that dates to 1973.

Danny S. Edwards was indicted on two counts of rape based on events that allegedly occurred in 1973, when the victim was 13.

Edwards was indicted with the assistance of DNA testing, according to a press release from the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office. The victim came forward within the last month.

Edwards turned himself in on Friday, according to the release. He is being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.

In order to protect the identity of the victim, no further details are being released, according to the release.
