King’s Fork High School was evacuated Monday morning due to a smoke smell, according to Suffolk Public Schools.

A staff member at the school noticed the smell of smoke in a classroom about 7:45 a.m., and the building was evacuated and the fire department called “as a precaution,” school district spokeswoman Bethanne Bradshaw said.

After inspecting the building, fire officials cleared the building and allowed staff and students to return inside at about 8:35 a.m., according to Bradshaw.

She reported that the smoke smell was caused by a lighting ballast.

Students were able to eat breakfast after returning inside, Bradshaw says, and lunchtime was adjusted to allow the full allotted time for two scheduled exams.
