Suffolk police on Thursday released more information on a Wednesday morning crash that took the life of a Franklin man.

Daniel Lee Post, 52, called 911 at 5:57 a.m., city spokeswoman Diana Klink said in a press release. He said he had run off the road and was in a body of water but did not know his exact location.

Dispatchers found his general location through a “ping” off his cellphone, and emergency crews from five jurisdictions began searching all bodies of water in the area. Police also obtained his name and home address through phone records and contacted his family, who informed them of his normal route to work, which narrowed the search.

Between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m., officers found tire tracks and a piece of a vehicle in the 9400 block of South Quay Road. A short time later, Virginia State Police divers entered the water and found Post and his Dodge Dakota pickup.

There still is no word on what caused Post to run off the road.
