Vote early, vote often

There’s a dog in sunglasses and a dog curled up on a favorite person’s shoe. There’s a rescued kitty and even a pet turkey. Seriously. They are among the entrants in this year’s Priceless Pets Photo Pageant, sponsored by The Cove — Center of Veterinary Expertise and the Suffolk News-Herald.

This is the second year the newspaper has held the contest, which supports and raises awareness of the Suffolk Humane Society’s annual Mutt Strut dog walk. Mutt Strut is the Humane Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and it promises to be bigger than ever this year, with a new location at the YMCA’s Camp Arrowhead on Kenyon Road on May 4.

We love the Suffolk Humane Society for the great work its volunteers do on behalf of stray and companion animals around the city. The commitment of those volunteers has helped many dogs and cats avoid spending their last few days in cages awaiting euthanasia.

We love Mutt Strut because of the opportunity it gives folks to get to know more about the Humane Society and to help raise money to support its cause. The event is also a great time for families to see some of the animals available for adoption from the Suffolk Animal Care facility, and it features a wide range of canine contests and exhibitions, awards and prizes, along with a huge variety of pet-related vendors and merchandise. You can even bring your leashed and well-behaved dogs.

Among the awards to be presented this year are trophies for the winners of the Priceless Pets contest. And you have a chance to help pick the winners. Between now and midnight on Thursday, visit www.tinyurl.com/PricelessPets and click through the photos of our entrants. You’re sure to find one deserving of your vote — whether canine, feline or avian — and you can vote up to 10 times a day. You can even vote for multiple contestants if you find yourself torn and unable to choose.

We’ll see you at Mutt Strut. Meanwhile, vote early and vote often!
