A 25-year-old woman died after falling from the Sidney Hazelwood Bridge on Route 17 on Friday night.

Amanda Fawne McPhee, 25, of Wing Gate Court in Virginia Beach, was recovered from shallow water by a Suffolk Fire Department boat, according to a news release from the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office.

Isle of Wight deputies, Virginia State Police and rescue workers responded. The municipal line between Suffolk and Isle of Wight County lies on the bridge, which crosses the Chuckatuck Creek.

Investigators found a Nissan stopped on the bridge, facing northbound, occupied by Charles Beyrod, 25, of Herons Cove in Carrollton, according to the press release. Beyrod and McPhee were boyfriend and girlfriend.

Investigators learned McPhee, who owned the car, suddenly jumped from the moving vehicle and then fell off the bridge into shallow water. She had “a recent history of a psychological disorder,” according to the press release. Skid marks consistent with an emergency stop were found on the bridge.

The body has been sent to the medical examiner’s office for examination, the press release said.
