Y gets kids active

Healthy Kids Day at Suffolk Family YMCA on Saturday has a simple objective, according to the facility’s health and wellness director: Show children that being active and healthy is fun.

The Y’s annual event aimed at children will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. A whole host of activities are planned, according to Anna Guibas.

“The objective is just to get kids moving and active,” Guibas said. “We want to make sure that when they go to get their regular checkup, they see a successful increase in the cause of eating better, making healthy choices and becoming more active in their daily routine.”

The free event is open to the community. Activities will include a bounce house, twin spin, two-lane slide, little kids’ boot camp, sack races and mini soccer.

There will also be an obstacle course, jump rope, Zumba, Frisbee and indoor pool, with the option of plunging into its waters from a Tarzan vine, Guibas said.

“It’s fun for all kids and all ages, and it’s open to the general public,” she said. “Come one, come all.”

More than 350 children attended the event last year, Guibas said, and she hopes for a similar number this year — or even more.

“We know there are other events taking place in our city (on that day), but we are hoping they are able to stop in,” she said.

Folks can tour the Y at the same time, Guibas said. For children, it has I-Zone for ages 5 to 12, an interactive fitness room involving “sports, play and active recreation.”

GEKO (group exercise for kids) caters to ages 3 to 5, Guibas said, and Stay and Play is for 6 weeks through 5 years old.

Several vendors will help make the children’s day a success, Guibas said, including Farm Fresh, whose representative will talk about healthy eating; Suffolk Humane Society with its BARKS program, in which volunteers with therapy dogs read to children; and Lakeview Hearing and Balance Center.

Suffolk Library will also host a book fair, she said.

“It’s a great time to go ahead and register for camp,” Guibas added. “Summer is just around the corner, and it’s a fun, safe place of adventure during the summer months.”
