Farmers Bank awards $9,000 in scholarships

Farmers Bank recently announced its 2014 scholarship award winners.

The award acknowledges exemplary seniors in the Suffolk, Isle of Wight and Southampton County communities. Applicants are required to be accepted to an accredited two- or four-year college or university, exhibit scholastic and academic achievement, demonstrate a financial need, and display traits of high moral character such as honesty, self-respect, reliability, self-control, service, patriotism and responsibility.

The nine $1,000 scholarships were awarded to the following recipients:

Brittany Skinner of Southampton High School, attending Campbell University majoring in pre-pharmacy

Collin Mackenzie of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, attending Embry Riddle Aeronautical University majoring in aeronautical sciences

Connor McNamara of King’s Fork High School, attending Virginia Tech majoring in international studies

Eryn Owen of Lakeland High School, attending Paul D. Camp Community College majoring in early childhood development

Jessica Atkins of Isle of Wight Academy, attending University of Richmond majoring in history

Jessica Conley, a homeschool student attending Thomas Nelson Historic Triangle majoring in nutrition and food science

Leslee Umphlett of Windsor High School, attending Old Dominion University majoring in business

Samuel Gittleman of Smithfield High School, attending Virginia Tech’s College of Environment and Natural Resources

Taylor Hatfield of Nansemond River High School, attending Jefferson College of Health Services majoring in nursing
