Fire at church building extinguished

No injuries were reported after a Wednesday evening fire in an outbuilding belonging to a church on Bridge Road.

A passerby reported the fire at 8:07 p.m., according to a city news release. Units were on scene six minutes later and found heavy smoke and fire in the building, which is used as classrooms and storage space for the Village Christian Church in the 3000 block of Bridge Road.

There were no occupants in the building, and no firefighters were injured. The fire was declared under control at 8:40 p.m.

The Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department assisted Suffolk Fire and Rescue and the Suffolk Police Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.
