Mark Lambert fared the best out of three competitors from Suffolk in the first round of the ninth Senior Open of Virginia on Thursday at The Country Club of Virginia’s Tuckahoe Creek Course.

Lambert shot a four-over-par 76, putting him in 31st place, eight strokes back from the leader, Roger Newsom of Virginia Beach. George Riefler of Suffolk shot a 77, while Suffolk’s Mike Byrum produced an 82.

The three local golfers will continue on Friday.
