Suffolk’s Isaac J. Baker Jr. recently was honored by the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association during its first “Men in the Arts” recognition.
Baker is a percussionist who plays the djembe and congo drums, cowbells and balafon. He currently is being trained in the bass guitar and Caribbean double steel pan.
Baker holds an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree, is a disabled veteran and loves good music, whether it’s gospel, jazz, Latin, Africa or blues.
Baker is a member of several African cultural music groups, including the Sunset Drummers. He owns seven different instruments.
The SEVAA awards ceremony was held Sept. 6 in Chesapeake. The organization previously has held “Women in the Arts” and “Youth in the Arts” celebrations.
