Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

  • William Barnes, junior for Lakeland High School football: Despite a 48-7 home loss to regular Group 6A state title contender Oscar Smith High School on Friday night, he still created highlights for the Cavaliers with his impressive performance on defense. He recorded three interceptions, including one against Tigers star sophomore quarterback Shon Mitchell.
  • Tyler Brown, senior for King’s Fork High School football: He was as active scoring points for the Bulldogs as their most potent offensive weapons were on Friday night during a 55-19 blowout of host Great Bridge High School. He reached the end zone after a 10-yard interception return in the second quarter and a 78-yard fumble return in the fourth quarter.
  • Paige Christiansen, sophomore for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy field hockey: She has become a prolific scorer in recent wins, helping her team start its conference schedule out right by producing a hat trick in a 3-2 comeback victory on Tuesday against host Hampton Roads Academy. During a tournament in Axton the weekend prior, she scored both goals in her team’s 2-0 win over Chatham Hall.
