Police investigate hit-and-run involving school bus

The driver of this vehicle fled the scene immediately after a collision with a school bus Thursday morning on East Washington Street, police say.

Suffolk police are investigating a hit-and-run involving a Franklin school bus on East Washington Street.

The accident happened at 6:41 a.m. Thursday in the 2200 block of East Washington Street, according to a city news release. The head-on collision involved the bus and a gray, four-door Nissan, whose driver fled on foot immediately following the accident.

Nine students were on board the bus at the time, according to the news release. They were being transported to the SECEP program at John F. Kennedy Middle School.

None of the students was injured, but the female bus driver was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Traffic is being diverted from East Washington Street at Hollywood Avenue and at John F. Kennedy Middle School. The road will remain closed while the investigation continues.
