To the editor:

I am the former school board representative for the Sleepy Hole Borough in Suffolk. I vacated my seat in March after moving to a different borough in the city. On Nov. 4, Suffolk will hold a special election to fill this vacancy. This letter is an endorsement for David Mitnick, who is one of three candidates vying for the seat.

Mr. Mitnick served for years as a dedicated and beloved guidance counselor for Nansemond River High School, which serves the Sleepy Hole community. During his 36-year career in the school system, he also held the position of teacher, middle school vice principal, magnet school program administrator and adult education principal. In addition, he served as the Director of the Virginia Governor’s School of Medicine for 10 summers at the School of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University.

After retiring in 2010, he became president of the Suffolk Education Foundation, a volunteer position that raises money for student scholarships, teacher grants, and tuition assistance for dual-credit courses, advanced-placement classes, and test-fee assistance for qualifying students.

In this position he worked tirelessly to oversee events such as the annual golf tournament fundraiser, the college and career readiness fair, the State of the Schools annual address and other events that raise money and support both students and staff of Suffolk Public Schools.

He maintains close contact with his former colleagues and students from the school system. This close relationship makes him a strong judge of the current climate and morale within the schools.

David Mitnick is a consummate professional who always handles himself with dignity and professionalism. If elected, I know he will work to bridge relationships with city council and work effectively with all members of the board.

If you live in the Sleepy Hole Borough, please take time Nov. 4 to support a man who has given so much of himself to Suffolk Public Schools. I can think of no one more deserving of this position.
