Viola Lee Scott Cowling, 96, of 5757 Godwin Blvd., Suffolk, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was a native of Nansemond County and the daughter of the late Solomon and Patsy Scott.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Cowling; four daughters, Mary Cowling, Celestine White, Delma and Thelma Cowling; two sons, William Cowling and James Henry Cowling; two sisters, Leola Riddick and Hattie Stanton; three brothers, Edward Scott, Arthur Lee Scott and Willie B. Scott.

Viola was a homemaker and a member of Diamond Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Hill and Goldie Mae Cowling, both of Suffolk; 15 grandchildren, 68 great-grand children, 28 great- great-grandchildren, and six great- great- great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mattie Rawls of Suffolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at Diamond Grove Baptist Church by Dr. Calvin Lillard. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
