A contest run by the Suffolk News-Herald on Small Business Saturday received 57 entries originating from 25 different local businesses.

The newspaper and the city’s Department of Economic Development partnered to promote the contest. Shoppers who visited locally owned businesses in Suffolk on Saturday were asked to take a photo at the business and tweet it or post it to the newspaper’s Facebook page with the hashtag #SmallBizSuffolk.

On Monday morning, the winners of four $250 gift cards were chosen randomly from all of the entries.

“We’re excited to see the community come out and the fact we were able to work with (the Suffolk News-Herald) via the Facebook page, you can literally see the activity that folks are supporting small businesses in Suffolk,” Economic Development Director Kevin Hughes said. “I think it honestly gives us room for growth for next year’s campaign.”

The winners were Barb Sporcic Siry, who entered from Uncork’d on West Washington Street; Michelle Woods, who entered from Cosmic Pizza on West Washington Street; Maryanne Conrod, who entered from Shooting Star Gallery on North Main Street, and Ann Crusenberry, who entered from Adornment with Attitude on Bridge Road.

The winners will receive $250 gift cards or gift certificates to the business from which the winning entry was submitted. The News-Herald is paying for the gift cards.

“It was a privilege to promote Suffolk merchants on Small Business Saturday,” said Steve Stewart, publisher of Suffolk Publications, which publishes the Suffolk News-Herald, Suffolk Living magazine and related digital products. “The response from the community was terrific. We look forward to making next year’s contest even bigger and better.”
