Thursday’s game between King’s Fork High School’s girls’ basketball team and visiting Western Branch High School was a meeting featuring two of the most highly-regarded teams in the area, but the final score indicated a significant gap may separate them.

The Lady Bulldogs produced a complete performance, doubling the output of the Lady Bruins in a 70-35 blowout.

“When we’re playing with no issues, we’re a very good team,” KF coach Maurice Fofana said. “We moved the ball well, we shot well, we played well, good defense. It was a pretty good performance.”

The Lady Bulldogs created issues for Western Branch in the paint.

“We just kind of did what we wanted in the inside, and when they double-teamed, my guards made shots,” Fofana said. “I think that we were just the better team.”

King’s Fork sophomore Amesha Miller turned in a monster game with 24 points and 24 rebounds. Fofana said he is impressed with what she gleaned from last season playing alongside former King’s Fork star Khadedra Croker, who now plays for Virginia Tech.

“To say that she’s learned a whole lot from Khadedra is an understatement,” the coach said. “She really did take heed and listen.”

Thursday’s contest was the second game of the season in which Miller reached the 20s both in points and rebounds, and she has produced double-doubles in almost every game.

“She’s going to be real exciting to watch as she gets older,” Fofana said.

Sophomore Cydney Nichols was another major impact player for King’s Fork on both ends of the court, contributing 21 points and seven steals.

“She’s in my top five of most athletic kids that I’ve coached,” Fofana said. Of her Thursday stat line, he added, “I’m not surprised by those numbers.”

He highlighted the incredible potential that Nichols and Miller have, given how good they already are as sophomores.

“The talent level that those two have is so great that it’s kind of scary to see where they’ll be in the next two years if they continue to work,” he said.

Senior Imani Lewis just joined the Lady Bulldogs this year but has become a key contributor and added 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists on Thursday.

“Imani is a great floor leader, point guard, and she just kind of keeps things together for us,” Fofana said.

Freshman Cam Harris has recovered from injury and joined the rotation for King’s Fork. She, junior Jac’Quazja Council and junior Jazlyn Dunn each scored five points on Thursday.

Junior Latonia Thomas did not play due to a foot injury.

The Lady Bulldogs (10-1, 2-0) begin conference play against Peninsula teams on Tuesday when they host Phoebus High School.
