NSA girls trump Lady Crusaders

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy girls’ basketball team continued its run of success this season in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools with a 45-38 victory over host Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School on Thursday evening.

The Lady Saints leaned heavily on their starters for points against their hosts, and junior point guard Harper Birdsong led all scorers in the game with 18 points. She struggled from the field, going 5-for-24, but was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Birdsong also contributed six rebounds and four assists.

NSA junior center Caroline Hogg also was key to her team’s efforts, providing 17 points to go with 12 rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals. Eight of her boards came on offense, giving the Lady Saints added opportunities.

Sophomore forward Kelly Hogan of Nansemond-Suffolk continued to show her strength on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds in addition to six points.

Lady Saints senior guard Bridget Murphy produced some important numbers, finishing with a team-high three steals to go with five rebounds and four points.

Nansemond-Suffolk (12-2, 3-0) hosts Norfolk Christian School this afternoon in a key game between conference powers. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
